The first major device type that is specifically contained under the broader Communication and Control Cable category on our site is Plenum Cable (CMP). Even though there are generally localized codes for buildings that pertain to fire requirements, there are still recommendations given by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). With plenum rated cables in particular, NFPA has a standard numbered 262 and UL has a similar standard numbered 910. These both touch upon the testing requirements that are used for ensuring compliance in the way of burn properties and density of smoke. These CMP cables are made by Omni Cable and Belden to pass the strictest of tests pertaining to smoke-generation properties and flammability. This testing is signified by a rating of CMP. UL has approved this cable variety for usage in air plenum spaces and these products do not require the additional inclusion of conduit for successful installation or operation.

A second type of Communication and Control Cable is Riser Rated Cable, also labeled as CMR to designate its riser rating. Installers will see CMR rated cable being required whenever cable devices need to run in between building floors and throughout vertical shafts that are open. There is a lower amount of air flowing on the cables in these situations, as well as more flexible burning allowance. Such cables are most appropriate for vertical shafts that do not fit into the category of environmental air plenum shafts.
