What are the best occupancy sensors for residential stairways?

Stairs can be a little trickier because normal sensors' fields of view will only reach straight out at a distance of 4 feet and cannot actually sense below that field of view. Also, they will respond only from motion at the top and at the bottom of stairs, but not in between.
 
For stairs, the best choice would be two ODS10-ID Series switches. The optimal setting is 10 Minutes before every shutoff, so that there will never be an issue where someone is on the stairs and the lights go out. These switches have shutters which will help keep the sensors from seeing everyone who walks by the stairway. These are not truly "3-Way," but are multi-location, since they will turn On from either location and Off when neither sensor senses occupants and the timing circuit runs out. If they were 3-way, they would turn on and off each time some one passed by on either end. They also have relays rather than triacs and, as such, will work with almost any type of lighting load.
