Characteristics of Shielded Cable Varieties
Generally speaking, any electrical cable which has insulated conductors surrounded by a conductive layer is considered to be shielded. Some cables will include braided copper strands for this layer, while others might include a material like aluminum, copper tape that is wound but not braided, or some kind of polymer material like nylon or PVC that is conductive.

In many instances, this shielding portion will also be covered with a jacket. The added benefit of a jacket is that it helps in cutting down on noise that results from electrical signals. It can also decrease the amount of electromagnetic radiation that is present, something which often interferes with devices that are associated with or near a cable. In shielded cables, the shielding can function as either a screening portion alone or as the return path for whatever signal the cable might be carrying.

Other Popular Applications
One example of a unique application for shielded cables is in security systems. With their specialized construction, shielded cables are beneficial in this context because they offer protection from interference; specifically, the kind of interference that often results from power or radio frequencies. This ultimately helps users in the prevention of false alarms.

Shielded twisted pair varieties of cable are another type that are often employed in public address (PA) systems, where the twisted pairs within the devices are intended to carry audio signals that are balanced. When used in this context, cable with shielding is typically terminated within XLR type connectors.

Most types of medium and high-voltage power cables used in 2000 volt and higher circuitry will also include shielding made of a material like copper, aluminum tape, PVC, or nylon. When grounded, this shield is able to equalize conditions around the cable’s conductor that would ordinarily lead to electrical stress. By being grounded, this helps to reroute leakage of the current to the device’s ground.
