Through the suppliers Belden and Omni Cable, we provide total access to Plenum Rated Cable for applications that require reliable electrical power in constructions with plenum areas. Most commonly, plenum spaces are those that lie above dropped ceilings or underneath floors that are raised. As a result of these areas’ increased tendency toward fire risks, the cable varieties made for such applications have to meet greater safety standards regarding flame retardance than other types of cable. Plenum-rated cables have a multi-conductor construction that is available without shielding, with signature Beldfoil shielding, or with overall foil and braid shielding.

In accordance with National Electrical Code (NEC) classifications, the Plenum Cables we carry are rated as Type CMP. All of these are rated to 300 volts and include tinned copper conductors, as well as insulation made of FEP and jacketing material constructed of FEP or Flamarrest. The other primary difference between varieties of Plenum Rated Cable is the shielding material.

Any compartment or chamber that has at least one air duct connected to it as part of a system for air distribution is known as plenum. Those options of plenum cable that are unshielded are non-conduit and are made with fluorinated ethylene polymer (FEP) or low-smoke polyvinyl chloride (PVC) jackets, in addition to having approval for their use in normal plenum applications, direct burial, and outdoor environments. Both types of plastic jackets on plenum rated cable are specially designed to have fire retardance capabilities.

Plenum cable meets a number of classifications and standards for safety and usage. For instance, they are approved by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to be installed in plenum applications without a need for the use of conduit. The cable used in these settings has also met flame test requirements under UL standard 910 CMP.
