Building Wire
Two major categories of Building Wire offered through our manufacturers Houston Wire & Cable, Priority Wire & Cable, Alan Wire, Nexans Energy USA, and Omni Cable are Thermoplastic High Heat-resistant Nylon coated (THHN) and Cross-linked High Heat-resistant Water-resistant (XHHW). While the former is commonly seen being used in machine tool, appliance, and control circuit applications, XHHW is utilized in other sorts of residential, commercial and industrial settings, including raceways and feeder wiring. |

What is THHN? In addition to the protection this nylon offers for mechanical purposes, it also acts as a buffer to prevent wire abrasion from these devices coming into constant contact with conduit. Jacketing in particular helps Building Wire to resist the effects of other things like grease, gasoline, and oil. Building Wire from manufacturers like Alan Wire, Nexans Energy USA, Priority, Houston, and several others has received rating approval for 600 volts maximum and has been UL listed for use in dry locations up to 90 degrees Celsius and in wet conditions up to 75 degrees Celsius. Those THHN wires that carry a dual rating are suitable for being used in wet applications as well as dry ones.
What Makes XHHW Wire Different? As a result of these differences, XHHW is costlier for installers and consumers than THHN. For certain applications, however, the cost difference is certainly worth it. If THHN is utilized in an inappropriate application that results in higher-than-desired heat, the coating on this wire will actually emit a highly unsafe and toxic smoke. All in all, while XHHW wire does carry these important benefits over the other, it is also outside of the budgetary limits of many engineers and the projects they are working on. We always suggest getting in touch with OneStopBuy’s customer service and technical support team by way of phone, email, or live chat in order to discuss your particular application needs, as well as important budget considerations. We will help you find the wire products that can best serve these requirements. |
